Trend Alert: Porcelain Countertops

The trends with countertops have changed greatly in the last few years.  While the classic natural stone is still a viable option, the more often selected tops are non-porous, stain resistant, and virtually maintenance free.  It is no surprise that quartz countertops are giving granite a run for its money.  Now, quartz has new competition: porcelain countertops.  Following trends in Europe, typical floor tile is becoming bigger than it has in the past.  With the technology that has gone into making tiles larger and thinner, creating material suitable for countertops was a logical next step.  Many tile manufacturers have begun to premier their own version of thin porcelain countertops.  With so many different brands, it’s difficult to sift through all the new information.  So we have condensed the information into 7 helpful facts!

1.       They’re thinner than stone countertops.  The first thing most notice about porcelain countertops is how thin they are.  The specific thickness will vary depending on the manufacturer, but our new black marble look top is 12 millimeters thick.  Even though they’re thin, they’re still quite strong.  Our countertop is able to have an overhang of ten inches without the need for additional support.

2.       They are non-porous and hygienic.  As with most porcelain tile, porcelain countertops naturally have an incredibly low porosity.  Since they don’t absorb anything, these countertops are very hygienic.

3.       It’s suitable for outdoor use.  In addition to being non-porous, the pigments used in the countertops are resistant to UV rays and will not fade or yellow in sunlight.

4.       It’s resistant to scratching and abrasion.  With the strength of porcelain, these countertops are harder than other countertop materials.  They are highly scratch resistant and resist deep abrasion.

5.       It’s easy to clean and maintain.  This material can be cleaned with essentially any product.  It isn’t susceptible to etching as natural stone would be.

6.       It’s heat resistant.  As porcelain tile would be, these countertops are heat resistant.  Even more so, they are resistant to thermal shock, frost, and even fire!

7.       They come in many styles and colors.  These countertops could replace practically any option for countertops.  With state-of-the-art printing capabilities, these porcelain countertops are able to mimic everything from concrete to marble!  And with a variety of colors, this product would be an easy upgrade to any kitchen.
